Derived from the root seen in Proto-Balto-Slavic *ránkāˀ (“hand, arm”) (whence modern Lithuanian rankà (“hand, arm”)). Cognate with Latvian riñkt (“to gather”), Old Prussian senrīnka (“collects”, 3rd person singular present); outside of Baltic, compare perhaps Irish comrac (“encounter; battle”) and Welsh cyfrang (“encounter; meeting”).
