Cognate with Latvian cìrvis, possibly dialectal Russian черв (červ, “sickle”), черва́к (červák, “saw”). Derksen reconstructs Proto-Balto-Slavic *kirw(i)os, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut”), cf. ski̇̀rti, kir̃pti. Compare also Estonian kirves (“axe”).
