From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gulbis. Derksen observes that the related Proto-Slavic *golbъ ~ *kolpъ (“swan, pelican (spoonbill)”) was “assume[d] a substratum origin." Balto-Slavic cognates include dialectal Lithuanian gulbis, Latvian gùlbis (“swan”), Old Prussian gulbis (“swan”), Proto-Slavic *gъlbь.
