Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *tr̥-ped-ih₂- (“having three feet”), from *tr̥- (“three”, combining form) + *pṓds (“foot”) + *-ih₂ (feminine nominal suffix). The first element is conventionally linked to *kʷtur- (“four”, combining form), explicitly favored by Beekes over the connection to *tr̥-, but Sihler points out that early tables had three legs, not four.
