15th century. From Old Galician-Portuguese, either from Vulgar Latin *terebella, a diminutive of Latin terebra (“gimlet”), or from a diminutive of trabs (thus possibly a doublet of treu). Cognate with Occitan taravèla, Portuguese taramela and Spanish tarabilla.
