Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese bravo, from Latin barbarus, which was frequently found in Galician medieval Latin documentation with the meaning of "uncultivated, fallow". Alternatively from Vulgar Latin *bravus or *brabus, from a fusion of Latin prāvus and barbarus.
