Inherited from Middle French voirre (most probably pronounced /ˈvwɛːrə/), from Old French voirre, from Latin vitrum. Doublet of vitre. The irregular evolution of /wɛ/ into /ɛ/ in this word is "early but normal after labials"; the influence of derivatives with an etymological first-syllable /ɛ/ may also be relevant.
