From Proto-Finnic *lookka (“shaft bow”), borrowed from late Proto-Slavic *lǫkъ. Doublet of lenkki and linkki. In Finnish, the meaning has abstracted from the original “shaft bow” → “group of things (attached with a shaft bow)” → “group, class”.
