noun

  1. advantage, benefit [with elative ‘from’ and allative ‘who or what benefits’] (any condition, circumstance, opportunity, or means, particularly favorable to success)
  2. interest (any stake held by any type of stakeholder; any reason for which one wishes for something to succeed due to what they may gain if it succeeds or lose if it fails)

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *etu. Equivalent to esi- (“front, fore-”) + -u; originally "the area in front of something" (now all but confined to etu-), from which the other senses have developed through figurative use, perhaps already in Proto-Finnic. However, Häkkinen (2004) notes that the abstract senses are only attested since the 18th century.
