From Byzantine Greek διαβάζω (diabázō), simplification of Ancient Greek διαβιβάζω (diabibázō, “to transmit, to send on”). By surface analysis, δια- (“through”) + βιβάζω (“cause to mount”), βιβάζω being the causative of βαίνω (baínō, “to go”). Cognate with Mariupol Greek дъавазу (ðavazu).
